What We Teach
Kindergarten students at IFS begin or continue their Mandarin literacy journey, learning to write frequently used radicals, frequently used Chinese characters, and words made of 2 or more characters. Their written vocabulary surpasses 80 words by the end of the year and the vocabulary they recognize surpasses 170 words, allowing them to read leveled readers with high-frequency words and repeating phrases.
Our math program combines teaching strategies from China and progressive practices from western countries to help our students develop strong mathematical thinking, a positive mindset toward math and a solid command of math facts.
During kindergarten, students work with addition and subtraction expressions, work on number sense through composing and decomposing up to 20 and beyond. Students are also challenged with more advanced topics such as telling time, and symmetry and the concept of tessellation in geometry.
For English literacy, our kindergarten students work on foundational reading skills, work on conventions of standard English and begin composing opinion, informative and narrative writing with a combination of writing, drawing and dictating.
Science teaching and learning at IFS is based on Next-Generation Science Standards. Our students take the role of scientists with scientific trials and investigations.
How We Teach
Kindergarten students learn by engaging in project-based learning. Each trimester they explore a science or social studies question which requires literary skills in Mandarin, core math concepts, science and/or social studies, and English. In kindergarten, students develop a sense of independence and hone their skills in communication and collaboration through collaborative problem-solving. For our project showcases, students present capstone projects to the IFS community.
Kindergarten Projects
For the Honey Bees project, students learn about the anatomy of bees, their life-cycle and the roles of different bees in the socially complex honeybee hive. During the trimester, students consider the question: how do bees work together. Students share their learning by creating an anatomically correct 3D model of a specific type of honeybee and building a representation of the bee’s life-cycle. For the project capstone, students also present their knowledge in both English and Mandarin in short videos.
In Materials and Motion, students carry out a series of investigations in the role of scientist. They experiment with materials—wood, paper, and fabric—and determine how material properties determine their use. Students also employ what they know about material properties to make paper, papier-mâché, and engineer structures that float, repel water and deflect heat. Students consider the use of materials as stewards of our environment - thinking about questions such as: what is the cost to the environment by not recycling or using materials such as wood, paper and fabric?
