International Friends School, opened in 2018, is an independent, non-profit school serving children Toddler - 4th Grade in Bellevue WA. We grow one grade a year until 5th grade.

Our specialized bilingual program nurtures Mandarin-English 21st century learners.

As the first Quaker Friends School in Washington State, we intentionally integrate the testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship into the everyday experiences of our teachers and students.

School News and Updates

  • This Trimester, we are focusing on the Quaker Testimony of Peace. Elementary students will explore ways to find their inner peace, while early childhood children will practice Anjingxialai (sit in silence).

  • Our Kindergarteners spent eight weeks exploring Pacific Northwest birds through hands-on, project-based learning. From researching local species and building life-sized bird models to creating clay eggs and nests, students brought science to life. The project culminated in a joyful bird festival, where they shared their guidebooks, artwork, and observations on a nature walk.

  • In this project-based learning unit, students dive into the world of entrepreneurship by exploring how businesses meet customer needs, set prices, and market products. Integrating literacy, math, Mandarin, and SEL, students design their own goods or services and put their skills into action at a Mini-Business Fair. From conducting surveys to creating ads and practicing sales, students gain real-world insights into the role of small businesses in their community.

  • At IFS, each child is known by both their English and Chinese names—an important part of who they are. Through storytelling, name recognition activities, and classroom conversations, our students celebrate their identities, learn the meaning behind their names, and honor the cultural richness they carry with them every day.

  • Each spring, our students help welcome and care for baby chicks—an annual tradition that sparks curiosity, students responsibility, and brings so much joy to our school!

  • In this engaging unit, students dive into the birth of the nation—examining the causes of the Revolutionary War, key founding documents, and the formation of the first U.S. government. Through collaborative research and historical inquiry, they explore major events, movements, and figures from multiple perspectives. The unit culminates in a final project that connects early American history to its impact on the world today.

  • Our 4th-grade students recently explored Chengdu, China, on an unforgettable international learning adventure! From local school visits to cultural immersion, spicy food making to panda encounters, they gained firsthand experiences that brought Mandarin and global learning to life. This journey broadened their perspectives and deepened their appreciation for Mandarin language, culture, and connection.

  • We’re proud to share that our very own Assistant Head of TCL, Wendy, along with Pre-K1 Lead Teacher, Riva, and Toddler Lead Teacher, Angelina, were invited to present at the Early Childhood Chinese Immersion Forum (ECCIF) on May 3rd in San Francisco!

    Their presentation, "Creating an Inclusive Classroom for Neurodivergent Young Learners," highlighted practical strategies and insights for supporting all children—especially those with diverse learning needs—within a Mandarin immersion environment. They shared real-life examples from our classrooms, offering tools and approaches to foster belonging, empathy, and success for every child.

    We are so proud of our educators for representing our school and contributing to this important national conversation on inclusive early childhood education!

  • Our Pre-K2 students explore the human body in a fun and age-appropriate way—learning about the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, nervous, and digestive systems. Through songs, stories, hands-on activities, and play, they begin to understand how their bodies move, grow, and stay healthy. The unit concludes with our joyful annual Dragon Olympics, where students put their knowledge into action through games, movement, and celebration!

  • Our toddlers are building a sense of responsibility and belonging by taking on meaningful classroom jobs. From watering plants to setting the table, these daily routines help them develop confidence, independence, and pride in contributing to their school community.

  • Each week, our elementary students partner with our early childhood friends for outdoor play and gardening fun. These cross-age connections build community, encourage mentorship, and create joyful moments of learning and friendship across age groups.
